Barcelona to be home to a new European supercomputing center

Barcelona will be home to the Spanish node of the European Supercomputing Network, Spanish Minister of Science and Technology Cristina Garmendia confirmed. The Catalan capital will host the new Mare Incognito supercomputer which will be connected to similar supercomputers in Germany, France and Italy.

The Mare Incognito is to be installed at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and is expected to be fully operational by 2012-2013. The EUR 100-million project will be financed by the Spanish and Catalan governments.

The Mare Incognito will be able to process data up to 100 times faster than the Mare Nostrum, Barcelona's current supercomputer.
